One good thing–student edition

On Friday last week, I got a Friday Letter from a lovely girl saying that she was feeling overwhelmed with all her AP classes and that she was having a hard time finding joy.  She asked for my advice…

I said I could only speak from personal experience, but that two things have helped me when I’ve felt overwhelmingly busy: (1) Make lists, cross stuff off as they get done, and allow myself to feel good about crossing even the smallest task off the list; and (2): One good thing.  “Every day may not be good, but there’s at least one good thing in every day,” I wrote.  I asked her to email me one good thing every day this week before the end of the day (which she took to be before school got out…whoops…).

I kind of forgot I told her to do this, but I promptly received an email right after the last bell rang today.  She wrote about what went well (although she included aspects that didn’t go well, too…I can work with this… ;)).  I emailed back a short reply and encouraged her to keep focusing on those positive moments tonight.

We’ll see how this goes.  I know that this discipline has made me a much better teacher, and I would even go so far as to say a better person.  I hope it can help one more individual…
