Many of my Intermediate Algebra kids have missed a lot of class recently for reasons beyond both their control and mine. Today, a girl said that she was gone when I taught increasing/decreasing behavior of functions. Her partner asked, “Oh! Mrs Peterson, can I teach her?”

The girl who asked this was the girl who accidentally got put into my class at the beginning of the year, as opposed to a special ed class. But she begged her counselor to stay (yes, this melted my heart), and has done really well since.

Now this girl is asking to help those around her. She is absolutely soaring in math class. I don’t know how long she had been in special ed math classes, but I am beyond delighted that she has progressed out of those classes and now even feels confident enough in her math skills to help her peers.

To witness transformations like these is truly one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
