Whiteness

Today we had a 50 minute “Activity Period.” The whole Upper School started off in the Chapel where three short videos were shown about “Whiteness” (in an attempt to start having more conversations about diversity of all kinds). Then my homeroom and another homeroom got together, and instead of using the lesson plan we were given, we just had the kids talk. I was afraid that the kids wouldn’t have things to say, but we ended up going past the last minute with all but a handful of kids speaking with each other respectfully, asking questions, and talking about race/ethnicity/identity/perceptions-of-ourselves/perceptions-we-have-of-others.

I suppose this was my one good thing, because I was very fearful that no one would speak, but this did not happen.
