We were discussing limits at infinity this morning. Students looked through their examples and figured out what caused the limit to be infinity but were having trouble writing a concise description. I wrote “the degree of the numerator must be” and paused to ask if they knew what degree meant. They had lots of definitions! Measure of an angle, unit of temperature, the thing you get when you graduate… I didn’t realize there were so many definitions! We did eventually get to the relevant definition and finish the sentence, but it was an amusing and eye opening interlude.
