During our community time today, we had a speaker talk to the Upper School about gender pronouns. The speaker was the kindergarten assistant teacher who is gender queer and identifies by the gender pronouns “they.” Not only was their story fascinating, but they also made quite concrete why these discussions we’ve been having about gender, sexuality, and identity during homerooms are important. My advisees listened with rapt attention. And after the talk, Upper School kids asked great questions.
I had to lead a discussion in advising about gender fluidity before the speaker, and I was nervous about doing so. But my kids were happy to engage.
