I was out for most of last week. I got to go back to school today. That was a good thing.
I have a student who’s not doing so hot in Calculus right now. If he dropped last week, it wouldn’t show up on his transcript, and he’d be free and clear to play basketball this winter. I talked to him and his mom on the phone last week about what they’d like to do. It was really up to them, but I gave him some things to work on if he wanted to stay and told him that my main fear was that he’d walk away telling himself that he couldn’t do it – not that this wasn’t the right time, but that he was unable to. He told me that he’s not a quitter and he wants to see it through, but he wasn’t sure.
I didn’t know what he’d decided until he walked into class this morning.
Me, with a big grin: “Hey! It’s really good to see you.”
Him, with a bigger grin: “Hey! Yeah. Ok!”
His mom told me today that he’s been working with a tutor and that he’s started doing on some of the things I suggested. He has a ton of work ahead of him, but he’s up for the challenge. I’m so proud of him for not giving up.
