Writing the good

It was a review day today in calculus, so before the kids started their study guide, I asked them to turn to their “One Good Thing” page in their notebooks and write. 

I admit: every time I ask my students to do this, I’m shocked that I get two full minutes of silence from them as they write. Every time I think, “Why do they just do what I ask them to do?” But they do. And I don’t read what they write, but it sure looks like they’re writing about good things. 

We don’t spend tons of time on this, and I don’t know if it makes any difference to them. But it does my heart good to see them reflecting and writing–slowing down long enough to be grateful for the big and the small. 

My good thing today is these kids with whom I get to share a classroom…and with whom I share good things.
