Poster

Kids got their act together for the most part today so I would say my disappointment and my parent emails were taken well.

Praise be.

We have this second hour poster challenge that I’ve allowed to eat up way too much class time, telling myself it’s bringing my second hour together, which maybe it is, but dang they gotta do some work at home then.

We finally finished it today. What I love about ours is that every kid played a role. One artist watercolored the background. Then the class came up with a quote that described kindness in exactly nineteen words, the number of students in my second hour (don’t be fooled; I have thirty-seven in fifth hour). Each student took a word and made a mini-poster from it. Then, a student brought her Polaroid camera and took a picture of each student holding up his/her word. I arranges the Polaroids and taped them onto the watercolor backdrop and handlettered the word kindness on the top.

Once the student was done photographing everyone, she said, “Mrs. Peterson, do you want a picture?”

“Oh no no–this is all you all.”

Boy. Howdy. That was the wrong thing to say. Who knew nineteen voices could sound like thirty-seven?

“You have to be in it, Mrs. Peterson!”

“We have no more words. And we have to get back to calculus!”

“Make a heart! Make something to put on the end! Please?”

“Ok but only so you all will be quiet and get back to math.”

So a heart was made. A picture was taken. And the darn poster is finally complete.

It looks good. It looks like my second hour.

I saw one of my second hour students bring a friend by to show it off.

It made me really happy.

It was probably worth sacrificing a little bit of math.

Probably.
