Good things

Yesterday I said I was going to stop comparing this year to other years and start focusing on new things I’m doing that I love and will keep, if given the opportunity:

  • When my kids choose to write their stories (instead of video record), I’ve encouraged them to include pictures. I. Love. This. I remember my dearest mentor Lisa once told me “We might teach differently if we had every kid’s PreK picture.” Um yes. It’s really hard to be mad at a cute preschooler. Trust me on this:
  • I don’t know if I’ll have the opportunity to teach a virtual calculus class again, but I’m kind of loving the challenge of something so new (to me). My kids are *rocking* the verbal part of their unit test; I’m getting screen time with each of them; and—in so doing—learning how to develop relationships with kids I’ve never met. I have a lot of growth still, don’t get me wrong, but I’m still in that exponential growth phase here—my first and second derivatives are both positive—so that’s exciting.
  • The masks and the distancing make collaboration a lot harder. But, this has forced me to rethink our review games. I think we had such a fun time in precalc today reviewing for tomorrow’s test, all while still staying safe and yet encouraging collaboration. I shared the game with the other precalc teachers and during first hour I got an email from one of them saying how well it was going. I really, really love my team. They embrace my crazy. 🤪
  • I finished digitalizing calc’s second test. And now every kid will get a different version. It’s super secure. And it’s a big thing I got to check off my to-do list today.
