I teach 3rd graders and we’ve been fully remote since the school year started. One of my goals has been to build their independence because I know that most of their parents are working and can’t be there all the time to help with stuff. One of the things I’ve tried to be sure they know how to do is to email me using our school google accounts. I want them to email me with questions rather than go to their families.
Mondays are different for us. Most days we’re synchronous for the majority of the day but not Mondays. We all gather first thing for a morning meeting and then I meet with different small groups through the morning. The afternoon is reserved for meetings. So I provide asynchronous work for them. We’ve been doing this for three months now and it’s a decent routine. Today, though, I noticed multiple students emailed me with questions rather than asking their parents to email me. Another handful let private comments on assignments in google classroom with questions.
It feels like they’re taking ownership of their own learning and assignments and it is definitely a good thing!
