My favorite activity to do after Christmas Break is to make a Kahoot with one question about each student in it. They love guessing even though no one gets more than half right. In their semester reflection papers, I asked them to tell me one thing about them that I didn’t know. So many of them forgot what they wrote and then were surprised at the amount of things I knew about them. 😂 For people who didn’t do their paper, I used their middle name or birthday month to make sure everyone could be included.
After the Kahoot I asked them to get out their notebooks. One kid immediately says, “I didn’t do it.” I said, “Do what?” He said, “Whatever you’re about to check in our notebooks.” I then explained that I was going to actually teach a lesson in person and he hadn’t missed anything. (We are hybrid and they watch videos and copy notes on their remote days.)
When I said I was teaching in person, a student’s face (who had been full remote the first semester and now returned to in person) lit up and she said, “This is great!”
In my freshmen class, a student’s response was “I feel like we should have to pay for this or something.” I said, “You can tip me on the way out.” 😂 Kidding aside though I realized this is the first time I’ve actually taught that class…ever. They’ve only ever watched me on video. 😬
I was honestly a little nervous today because I was teaching for only like the second day this whole year. Especially after breaks I sometimes feel like I forgot how to do this and howdoIevenknowwhattosay!
But I felt like I needed to bring positive energy to the first day back and I believe I accomplished my goal.
