Word Study

For several years now I’ve worked to incorporate word study into our morning messages. We explore chunking words, prefixes and suffixes, various ways to make plurals, and more. For a while now we’ve been studying prefixes and suffixes. I include words that highlight our focus in our morning message and we discuss them (at least sometimes).

Our current literacy unit is around nonfiction. For our multi-day read aloud we’re currently reading Solve This! Forensics by Kate Messner and Anne Ruppert.

Right now we’re trying to solve mystery #2. Some of the evidence includes work in toxicology. One of my students threw this in the chat as we read and discussed our theories and totally made my day.

I know a lot of what we’re studying doesn’t feel relevant to 3rd graders. So it brings extra joy when they make connections across their learning.
