Convert

A past student (current senior) came to visit during my plan today. That alone is one good thing. I formed such close relationships with the now-seniors, many of whom I had in PreCalc as sophomores and in Calc as juniors. It was the first group in a long while that I had looped with and it was the first group I had had since they were tenth graders. And then things ended so quickly…

So whenever I get to see one of them and we get to catch up and they say they miss me and I think they mean it…it’s salve to this overworked, exhausted soul.

And then…

We started talking about the flipped classroom! A lot of her friends are in my class this year so she had heard about it.

“I wish more math teachers would do this. How great would it be to have basically all class time to ask you questions?! We don’t need you in person for the lecture. A video of you is fine. We need you in person when we get stuck.” (I’m paraphrasing but this was absolutely her point.)

You heard it here first, folks.

I love flipping. I love that I can be with my kids and not in front of them.

Thank you, 2020, for this very unexpected gift. I never would have tried it without you. I was the world’s greatest flipped classroom skeptic. But I’m a total convert now…
