We played a review game in PreCalc today for their test tomorrow. I was so worried about this unit: exponentials and logs. I always teach it as if they’ve seen the material before because…they’ve seen the material before. But this group first saw logs during Crisis Learning 2020, meaning several had never worked with them before this year. (You should have seen my face when they asked me what e meant.)
So this year I taught the unit as if they had never seen this stuff before (I literally pulled out files from when I taught Algebra 2 years ago, which was its own comedic relief—maybe I have learned a thing or two the last ten years.)
Aaaaand…they’re killing it. When they took their quiz a couple weeks ago, I think they did better than any group I’ve ever had.
Yes, I slowed down a bit, but not a ton. And they’re keeping up with past groups who had had significantly more time with these concepts.
Most days I worry about the educational deficit our students and teachers will have to deal with for years because of the last twelve months.
And then some days I’m almost convinced that we can make up for it faster than we realized.
