Serve+Create

I gave my calc kids their final project today, Serve+Create. The directions are simply to serve someone and create something. That’s it. I haven’t been able to give this project the last couple of years due to time (and Covid), so I’ve been so excited to reintroduce this.

While I obviously find math very important, there are other skills that are much more important. I think service and art are two of those disciplines. Especially when we’re in times of transition or stress, I believe it’s crucial we look both outward (service) and inward (creative expression). So I love to end our class by practicing these two habits.

This first day of the project is always fun because I get to see their wheels turn…

“Can I make jewelry?”

“Can I teach everyone a dance?”

“Can we serve at a homeless shelter? What about an animal shelter?”

“Can I bring my homemade salsa?”

“Can I make a collage?”

Yes, yes, yes.

I try to tell them the answer is rarely no, but I love hearing these questions regardless.

I can’t wait to see what they come up with. They present in a week!
