One of my students is virtual for half the day and told me today, “I prefer studying at home, but I love your class.”
I often think about what it would have been like to be a student at Union High School. Homeschooled in high school, my experience was vastly different from that of my students, who share the hallways with 3500 other kids.
The hallways. Most of me believes I would have thrived at UHS. But even as an adult, those hallways are overstimulating. As much as I can, I avoid them during passing periods.
That said, it’s always been a desire of mine to create a bit of a sanctuary in Room 2704–especially for those of who could do without the chaos of the hallways.
So when someone tells me she typically prefers virtual learning but loves coming to 2704, I think I’m getting close to that sanctuary.
We rise by lifting as others.
And sometimes lifting looks a lot like welcoming—looks a lot like a quiet place to learn and question and be curious.
