Egg rolls

A student brought me homemade egg rolls this morning as a thank you for writing her a rec letter.

Egg rolls!

From scratch!

They were divine. I shared at lunch, and we all drooled over these perfectly scrumptious savory pastries.

I love my school. I love its diversity. Even more, I love that my kids feel comfortable sharing their cultures with me. As someone who has lived in four countries, there is nothing quite as vulnerable as sharing a piece of your heritage…your culture…you…and wondering how it will be received. Will the recipient hold your pieces gently? Will they laugh at what they haven’t experienced?

You never quite know.

So when a student knows she can share her culture with me—I count it a high honor.

But that’s exactly the subculture we’ve created at Union. It’s 100% normal to share, experience, and learn. Our diversity is our strength, and the students know it. The students know the importance of sharing their backgrounds and of listening to others. They know the give-and-take is how they grow.

It’s a gift to be a witness to this many cultures.

And it’s extra great when I get the best egg rolls in towns.
